This introduction lesson will set up the organizational procedures for the unit.  Students will become familiar with court numbers, boundaries, and an expectation for safety.  This lesson will also introduce them to a "team contract" which identifies certain roles for everyone on a team.  The motor portion of the lesson is focused on catching and receiving, and maintaining possession of a ball in a 2v2 game.

Tactical Problem: 

Maintaining possession of a ball in a small sided game.

Lesson Objectives: 
  1. Students will recognize the boundaries and expectation for safety in all of the courts/fields.
  2. Students will work cooperatively in small sided games, 2v2, 3v3
  3. Students will show teamwork by learning the contract and the roles that come with it.
  4. Students will show sportsmanship and skill by playing keepaway games of 2v2
Game 1: 

2v2 Team Handball  Keep Away
Goals: Earn 5 points per team and perform the duties of the contract

  • Coach, Trainer, Equipment Manager, recorder

Conditions:

  1. Players may only take 1 step with the ball
  2. Defenders will use a warm defense (arm's length)
  3. 5 passes in a row equals 1 point
Probing Questions: 

What role from your contract was the easiest to perform? hardest?  What advice do you have for each of the roles?
What skill was most important to your team's success in maintaining possession of the ball?

Practice Tasks: 

Partners passing in Home courts
Focus is on skill execuition.
Passing:

  • step to target
  • push ball away
  • use a firm pass

Receiving:

  • Show a "Target Hand"
  • Hands out to receive
  • "give" a little (absorb) the force of pass
  • Use a quick pass back
Game 2: 

2v2 Team Handball  Keep Away and Endzone
Goals: After maintaining possession for 5 passes (1 point), earn an extra point by passing the ball to a teammate over the endline (endzone).
Conditions:

  1. Players may only take 1 step with the ball
  2. Defenders will use a warm defense (arm's length)
  3. 5 passes in a row equals 1 point
  4. Extra point can only be earned after 5 consecutive passes
